Relationships

Standard

Love is not always patient nor kind. It is a delicate web that has to be rebuilt throughout time.Things in life get lost and need to be found because there are so many possibilities abound. There is a music in your mind that plays and refines through time. You can get lost in the complications that seem to bind. Each person changes and grows like a flower in the sun.

From birth to adulthood, we as humans form bonds and relationships. As kids we don’t see race barriers or people as colors. We see hearts, minds, spirits, heartache and love.

I have been through many crazy relationships with friends and lovers, but none are ever easy. You love, hate, need freedom and sometimes feel taken for granted. Life is an ever changing  growth with many ups and downs.

Some people put an impression on your heart that you love  forever. Others leave you wondering why things ever happened and what was I thinking. There are very few you meet who are your kindered spirits of your ebb and flow. Some people love another more than the other loves them. You may find yourself appreciating their kind-hearted gestures, but despising them at the same time. Love can mean tolerating all the imperfections of another no matter how hard it is.I hold many cherished memories in my heart and soul of people encountered in life, but some leave a permanent stamp that can never be broken by time or distance. There are only a handful of those friends family and lovers that your heart can never let go.

Caring and Sharing?

Standard

In 2014 I’m appalled by the number of people I’ve encountered who act like they r better than others by being nitpicky and disrespectful.
During the holidays and everyday life let’s try to remember to be kind to each other, pay things forward, and remember a time in your life when you were less fortunate. We all have our secret battles to overcome. If someone looks tired or hungry give them some cheer and offer your assistance/caring.
Live a day in my shoes or someone elses who has a chronic condition like IBD, IBS, Lupus,Asthma, Seizures, cancer or a number of horrible things out there. Most of them put on a happy face, try to act normal and rarely ever complain.
Be grateful for what you have because at any time or any day it could all be gone.

Skinny Mini’s Struggle to Gain Weight

Standard
  • Increase your calorie intake, but try not to do so by eating a lot of saturated fat. Skinny women who want to gain weight think they’d be happy with any fat, but fat that is not designated can end up anywhere. Genetics determine where your fat will go so eat more good food, and do it slowly.

  • 2

Pursue lean muscle weight gain by exercising and lifting weights. Hire a trainer to guide you in the right direction. Muscle weighs more than fat and distributes itself evenly.

  • 3

Stay away from treadmills and stair stepper machines. Aerobic type exercises are good for the heart but will not cause weight gain. If anything, you’ll burn more calories and lose more weight.

  • 4

Keep track of the amount of calories you consume in a given week. In order to gain weight, add about 500 calories to your norm. After a few weeks if you do not see a noticeable difference, add 500 more. Do this until you begin gaining weight.

  • 5

Consume 20 to 50 percent of your calories in proteins each day. This food group includes chicken breast, turkey breast, lean beef, eggs, fish and milk.

  • 6

Eat 30 to 60 percent of your calories in carbohydrates, which include, potatoes, brown rice, oats, pasta, whole grains, black beans, sweet corn and broccoli.

  • 7

Make sure to eat 20 to 30 percent of your calories in unsaturated fats and consume avocados, nuts and oils which provide your body with essential fatty acids.

  • 8

Drink a vitamin enriched meal replacement powder if you find it hard to eat six nourishing meals. Check the contents on the container before purchasing. Most of these protein drinks are high in nutritional value.

  • 9

Enable your body to absorb a higher amount of nutrients by eating six times a day rather than the traditional three. This recommendation isn’t just for those trying to lose weight. It has been proven to benefit all people of all sizes.

As a woman with Crohn’s Disease I’m constantly struggling with maintaining a healthy weight. Even as a child I was called skinny Mini because I was so small and skinny. It wasn’t until I was 14 that I was diagnosed with Crohn’s Disease. A cavalcade of Crohn”s complications such as UTI’s, my period, allergies and inflammation have always made it difficult to gain or maintain weight for very long. Now as an adult, I get so tired of seeing and hearing all the commercials about how to lose weight.

A woman who is underweight can develop many health issues such as a weakened immune system, decreased muscle mass, unhealthy hair, skin and nails, weakened bones and the inability to menstruate. Gaining weight and maintaining a healthy lifestyle can decrease the probability of these health issues. Women should look for healthy ways to gain weight, rather than gaining weight through increasing fat on their body.

Throughout the years I can’t even begin to tell you how many people have said you’re so skinny, you should eat more. Little did they know that I have always had a great appetite, but  many times I felt sick after eating foods.Until a few years ago, I never really considered how much of it could be food allergies and intolorences. After food allergy testing it was found that I’m intolerant to most dairy, also the test was inconclusive to gluten and yeast.

To gain weight, You are going to have to eat far more than before if you want to gain weight. It takes a little extra planning and a different mindset to eat more frequent small meals, especially if you are on the go. Since body composition is 80% diet, you are going to have to eat 5-6 small meals a day or 3 regular meals and snacks in between each. You need to provide lots and lots of proteins for those hormones to synthesize. This will be a new journey that I hope will get you back to wellness.

 Eat healthy fats

Eat plenty of healthy fats to increase your caloric intake. Eat your egg yolks, bananas, nuts, fish, coconut oil and other healthy fats.

 Increase protein intake

Never let your protein intake go lower than 1g/lb of body weight when you are aiming to add long-term muscle. It’s the building block of muscle, and your body is going to be starving for it.

Foods that help you gain weight

Whole eggs: It is economical and loaded with protein, vitamins A,D, E plus good cholesterol. make hard boiled eggs, scrambled eggs and even deviled eggs.

Natural fruit and juice: Sip 100-per cent fruit juice that’s low in added sugar and high in nutrients. Also eat fresh or frozen fruit whenever possible. All natural, unsweetened applesauce is also a good way to get your fruit.

 Daily tips to gain weight

Include three to four servings of fruits and vegetables to your daily diet. It is best to consume fruits in their natural form to get all the nutrients.

Make sure you get enough rest.

Oats: A bowl of oatmeal is the perfect nutritious breakfast. It is high in fiber, and it also provides the body with vital nutrients.

Yogurt: The healthy fruit-flavored, yogurt can give you as much as 118 calories. Include it in your daily diet for quick weight gain. If lactose or milk intolerant, buy soy, goat milk or other alternative

Chew food slowly to properly improve digestion.

  • Avoid excessive intake of beverages such as coffee and tea immediately after meals, as this hinders the absorption of minerals like iron.

Gain muscle mass. It’s a good idea to continue to exercise while you attempt to gain weight the healthy way. However, it’s probably best to lay off the cardio (which burns those hard-earned calories) and focus on strength training instead (which builds muscle mass and helps you to gain weight).

  • Strength training includes working with weights and performing exercises such as squats, deadlifts, bench presses, bicep curls, crunches, chin-ups and leg curls. Do not do high energy workouts such as zumba, aerobics and running that helps you lose weight.

Soothing foods for IBD

Standard

Some of my favorite things to eat to sooth my IBD is: sweet potatoes, Avocado, Hot Blended oatmeal, rice, blended soups, spanikopitas, scrambled eggs, unsweetened applesauce, pure dark chocolate, pineapple, cherries, blueberries, grilled/baked cod or salmon, and well cooked veggies such as carrots and broccoli.

This week I finally went online to find out how to make blended oatmeal. It is so easy to make and easy on my GI tract. All you do is grind 1/2 a cup of oatmeal in a coffee grinder or blender, add 1 cup of water or non dairy milk alternative, put in a small pan to cook on the stove for  about 8-10 minutes while stirring occasionally or place in a rice cooker. add your favorite sweeteners like Agave, Honey, brown sugar.

Blended soups are also wonderful when you need soothing food.Sometimes I make soups with chicken, beef or vegetable broth. First I steam veggies in a pan. while that’s going I saute onions and garlic in a pan. when all is cooked I blend it up in a blender with turmeric, salt, pepper and whatever other favorite spices.

Other times I use coconut milk for my cream soups. I usually steam broccoli or asparagus in a pan. Then I blend up the veggies with about a cup of coconut milk, spices and some of the water from steaming veggies. MMM good!

Well these are some of my tips for now.

Creating Wellness for IBD

Standard
For the person who hasn’t read any of my other blogs, I have lived with Crohns complications for now 27 years. I was diagnosed at the age of 14 in 1987, when doctors were still baffled by treating the disease. I have been on every modern medicine that modern doctors have available and even done clinical trials.Throughout this time I have have had at least one hospital visit a year, a take down and reconstruct surgery due to a puncture during a colonoscopy. I have avoided further surgery because it is not a cure and I know this because It runs in my family history.
Now I have decided to buckle down and live a natural lifestyle because modern meds and modern doctors have not improved my disease long term. Only with an all natural lifestyle have i had success. Then when I got lazy, overstressed or too busy with life I left my health on the back burner. Eating junk food on the go or at home because it is part of our easy access lifestyles. After this hospital visit my doctors again urged me with surgery as the best option and basically that I’m making a mistake by not doing it. So this time I built up a network of friends and family to call, text, e mail or message whenever I think of getting off track.
I will still need to follow up with my modern medical doctors, but not use all the damaging drugs with so many side effects. So here I go with a renewed sense of determination. stay tuned for updates.
Note:Most of these treatments are from past experience, friends with IBD and other things have been obtained by  natural Full Circle medical doctors.

REST, RELAXATION and REJUVINATION.

First of all getting your mind and body aligned is what it takes to get well. You must find ways to slow down, and destress. Only then will you be able to follow a healthy eating lifestyle.

People with IBD tend to be over achievers who are hyper and try to take on a superhero mentality of doing to much all at once.

Do you relate to many of these?
• Addicted to perfectionism
• A control freak, OCD about cleaning and etc…
• Fearful of rejection?
• Fearful of failure?
• Worried too much about what others think?
• A people pleaser?
• Afraid to say no?”
• An emotional eater?
• Angry at yourself or someone else?
• Needing to forgive someone or repair a relationship?
• Needing$to$ditch$certain$relationships$altogether?$
• In need of better boundaries?
• Consistently anxious?
• Depressed?
• Overworked?
• Overwhelmed?
• Stressed out?
• Spread too thin for your own good?
• Pushing yourself to exhaustion?
• Missing someone?
• Grieving a loss?
• In a toxic relationship?
• In a toxic living environment?
• Hiding?
• Blaming others?
• Playing the victim?

These are some of the circumstances that could be contributing to your illness, keeping you sick and preventing you from bringing the health vision you desire.

Nutritionally

Getting hydrated and reducing or eliminating sugar, caffeine, preservatives and artificial substances will reduce the stress on your GI tract and get you pointed in the right direction. Also eat smaller meals and drink fortified shakes and smoothies with added vitamins and minerals.

• Going gluten free
• Going dairy free
• Increasing therapeutic foods like kefir,fermented foods,homemade broth,and more
• Targeted supplements like probiotics and vitamins like B12
• Elimination diets

Crohn’s and Colitis patients suffer from malnutrition due to our body’s inability to absorb nutrients because our gut bacteria is not normal. If you ignore taking this area of understanding, then your GI tract won’t heal well. Also stress and a damaging emotional state plays a big part on a rode to wellness.

Steps to healing inflammatory bowel disease are:

1. Providing bowel rest. Find a high protein and vitamin, mineral rich drink to keep up calories between meals and on the go.

2. Killing off the bad bacteria and fungus in the gut (disease-causing organisms)

3.Re-Populating The Gut Flora , by taking a broad spectrum pro-biotic,a minimum of 7 to 10 billion CFU (colony-forming units) of each species, per day

4. Healing intestinal inflammation and ulceration. aloe juice

5. Resolving nutritional deficiencies

A full spectrum multi-vitamin and multi-mineral,

  • 3,000 to 4,000 IU of vitamin D3 per day. Use the right dosage for your skin color and environment.
  • B12
  • 4 to 6 capsules of cod liver oil per day (or 2 teaspoons).
  • 2 tablespoons of Udo’s Oil per day.
  • Pycnogenol or grape seed extract.
  • Coenzyme Q10.
  • Vitamin C in mineral ascorbate form – needed for your immune system and for blood clotting. Do not take it in ascorbic acid form, or it will cause loose bowel movements or diarrhea.
  • If you are having more than 3 bowel movements per day, take powder or liquid supplements, or open the capsules and dissolve them in liquid.

6. Detoxing your living environment

7. Healing the contributing emotional factors.60% of your body’s neurotransmitters are not in your brain, but in your gut!

8. Balancing your hormones. f you have had Crohn’s disease symptoms for longer than eight months, or if you have taken any kind of steroid or immune suppressant drug, then it is highly likely your thyroid gland is not functioning properly, and quite likely your adrenal gland isn’t either. Ideally, you should see a doctor who specializes in hormone balancing and have your endocrine system (glands that produce hormones) tested properly.

People Crohn’s disease have bacterial flora that is unbalanced throughout their gastrointestinal tract. The repeated use of antibiotics (often since childhood) and the invasive medical diagnostic tests alone have destroyed much of the “good” protective bacteria in their small and large intestines. When the good, protective bacteria are depleted, then disease-causing organisms like yeast (candida albicans), viruses, parasites, and bad bacteria flourish. This excess of disease-causing organisms causes inflammation and damage to the mucosal lining, resulting in leaky gut syndrome – a condition where undigested food particles and bacteria seep into the bloodstream, triggering allergic reactions and infection in other places in the body (the joints, skin, eyes, etc).

If you have back or belly pain or discomfort use this tried and true reliever from our great grandparents and many cultures.

Castor Oil Pack Components:

  • Cold-Pressed Castor oil.
  • Two sheets of plastic (garbage bags OK).
  • 1 yard cotton or wool flannel.
  • Heating pad (if indicated).
  • Large old bath towel.
  • 3 safety pins.

Preparing a Castor Oil Pack

Cut a piece of plastic that will cover the flannel with at least 1 to 2 inches extra around the border of the flannel. Drizzle approximately 1/4 cup of castor oil onto the flannel, then fold it in half to saturate. The pack should not be dripping with oil – it should have just enough oil to make a slight oil mark on furniture, as if you were going to polish it.

NOTE: The first couple of weeks you use the pack you will have to apply a tablespoon or so of oil about every 3 to 4 days. Eventually the pack will be saturated enough that reapplication of oil should only be needed every couple of weeks.

Lay out an old towel on the surface you will be lying on. Castor oil stains, and you want to avoid getting it on sheets, carpet, or clothing. Lie on your back and place the saturated flannel on your abdomen. Cover the flannel with plastic. Then place the thin dish towel or old cloth over the plastic. Place a hot water bottle or heating pad over the thin towel and plastic, and wrap the bath towel around you to hold it all snug.

Relax for 30 to 60 minutes. This is an excellent time to practice visualization, meditation, or deep breathing exercises, listen to classical music or sleep – or to watch a good movie!

When finished, you can remove the oil with warm water and soap in the shower. I prefer to just wipe my abdomen with an old towel and leave the oil on my skin to be completely absorbed while I sleep (I apply the pack at night, before bed – but I sleep on a towel or old sheets, as even the oil residue can stain).

Store the pack in a large zip-lock bag. You can reuse it many times, adding more oil as needed to keep the pack saturated. Replace the pack after it begins to change color (usually several months). Do not wash the flannel – just throw it out.

Yoga – Yoga is very helpful for back pain. Look for a video or yoga class that is either specifically geared to resolving back pain, or one that is called ‘therapeutic’ yoga.

a bath- with epsom salt and lavender also helps pain.

Time to get Serious about Health and Beauty products

Standard

The skin is the biggest organ of the body and absorbs about 60% of what we put on it.The rest is all about the food and water we digest.

Have you ever gone to the doctor to cure a rash, eczema or extremely dry skin and they give you a special steroid cream and some other follow up lotion that never quite cuts it? It’s because of most of the harsh ingredients in the follow up cream don’t work well with our skin.

Most consumers assume or trust that the substances they put on their bodies are safe just because that is what is readily out there. Unfortunately in the United States, the personal care products industry is virtually unregulated, and many toxic chemicals can be found in the most common of makeup, shampoos, lotions and other personal care products. In the US there is no legal requirement for manufacturers of organic beauty products to be certified. Many companies are choosing to become certified because there are so many company’s ‘claiming’ the organic status. If a product is certified it means that the manufacturer must comply with high international standards. The cosmetic industry definition of organic is any compound, which contains carbon. Carbon is found in anything that ever lived. So then it could be said rotting garbage is not toxic.

Chemical-free should be all those that could end up being detrimental to your health such as synthetic chemicals like: Parabens, Petrochemicals, Sodium Lauryl/Laureth Sulphate, TEA, DEA, MEA, PEGs, Any chemicals that directly cause cancer and that disrupt the endocrine system. In Japan researchers have found that Parabens actually age the skin. This ingredient has also been connected to skin allergies, skin sensitization, cancers and particularly breast cancer in women.

If you have been using products, which contain chemicals, and you switch to non-chemical organic products it is possible that your skin could break out in pumps or spots. Your skin can literally become addicted to the chemicals and suffocate and when you stop you using them your skin will start to cleanse.Unfortunately everyone’s body reacts differently to even natural things because you may unknowingly allergic or sensitive to something.

6 Health & Beauty Product Ingredients to Avoid

  • Petrochemicals
Examples include petroleum jelly, isopropyl alcohol or isopropanol, methyl alcohol or methanol, butyl alcohol or butanol, ethyl alcohol or ethanol (often used in skin astringents and perfumes or colognes).
  • Sodium laureth/lauryl sulfates and other sulfate-based detergents
Examples include sodium lauryl ether sulfate; sodium laureth sulphate; sodium lauryl ether sulphate (most commonly used in shampoos, shower gel, bubble bath)
  • Propylene glycol and polyethylene glycol, along with various ingredients formulated with PEGs and PGs
Examples include ethylene glycol (used in firming lotions) and propylene glycol (found in everything from deodorant, mascara, baby powder, after shave and more).
  • Formaldehyde & paraben preservatives
Examples include butylparaben, ethylparaben, methylparaben, propylparaben (found in sunscreen, shampoos, shaving gel, toothpaste and more)
  • Synthetic dyes
Examples include anything with F&DC preceding it, usually followed by a color and a number. (F representing food, D&C representing drugs and cosmetics), other color additives, including caramel, lead acetate, manganese violet, and more.
  • Artificial fragrances
Avoid most perfumes/colognes, which legally aren’t required to list ingredients to protect their trade mark. Use natural oils 100% purely derived from the flower or plant.

There are many cost effective and easily homemade soaps, lotions and even cosmetic recipes. If you don’t want to make them or don’t have the time there are many reputable online organic/natural Health and beauty sites. I even found organic shampoo called  Shea moisture in Wal-mart.

Carma’s Crohn’s and Colitis Chronicles

Standard

Both my mother’s parent’s relatives have some form of IBS, Crohn’s or Colitis. For 27 Years I have been an experiment and had many experiences with my Crohn’s Disease Battle. I’m a mom of three kids with a wonderful supportive husband which keep me striving for a better life. It is an enlightening and frustrating journey of many things learned throughout the years that I hope to share with patients and their families.

First of all never fully just go by what the Hospital doctors tell you. Yes they can heal some things for the short term while in the hospital, but it is all on you to stay well when released. You must use some of today’s technology along with other old fashioned remedies to remain well.

Throughout the coming weeks I will share recipes and all over home care to keep you on the path to wellness. Many of my tips and tools to wellness are meant to get the whole family to a back to basics way of life. In Today’s of ever changing technology many of us have forgotten to slow down and take a look at the little things which impact our life. Like putting away the new age devices and having simple family fun times. Eating homemade family meals with natural ingredients that get everyone involved in being healthy. Using Naturally derived and unmodified earth and human friendly home products. The crazy thing is that many of these things don’t really take much more time from our day than all the fast convenience things we’ve been commercially brainwashed to buy and do.
